The Volkswagen T2 belongs to the second generation of the Transporter range, which succeeded the T1 in 1967. Technically, the Volkswagen T2 remained faithful to the concept of a rear-mounted engine and rear-wheel drive. This layout originated with the T1 but was further refined in the T2. The model was developed as a practical commercial and passenger vehicle and, throughout its production run, evolved into a versatile platform suitable for a wide variety of applications, including camper conversions. The T2 was produced in Europe until 1979 and remained in production in other markets, such as Brazil, for many years thereafter. Built in 1976, this Volkswagen T2 Camper belongs to the later production years of the T2 series.

The camper versions of the Volkswagen T2, in particular, secured a permanent place in post-war recreational motoring.
