The Mercedes-Benz 200 GE belongs to the first generation of the Geländewagen, internally designated the W460. The G-Class was developed during the 1970s in cooperation with Steyr-Daimler-Puch and was introduced in 1979 as an off-road vehicle with a clear focus on robustness, simplicity and versatility. During the 1980s, the Mercedes-Benz G-Class evolved from a purely utilitarian off-roader into a model with broader appeal, while its characteristic angular design and ladder-frame construction remained fundamentally unchanged.

Technically, the Mercedes-Benz is distinguished by its straightforward construction, featuring rigid axles and a robust chassis. This made the model suitable for a wide variety of applications, ranging from demanding off-road use to private ownership. The angular bodywork and commanding seating position are defining characteristics of the first-generation G-Class and have remained integral to the model's identity ever since.

The Mercedes-Benz 200 GE was a version developed specifically for the Italian market in the late 1980s. At the time, Italy imposed substantial taxes on engines with a displacement of 2.0 litres or more. Although the 200 GE was technically available in other European countries, it was not actively marketed there by Mercedes-Benz. Compared with other W460 models, the Mercedes-Benz 200 GE was produced in relatively limited numbers, with Italy representing its principal market. The emphasis was placed less on outright performance—although the 200 GE is surprisingly smooth to drive—and more on reliability, ease of operation and versatility. This particular 200 GE was delivered new in Genoa, Italy, in May 1987.

Being delivered new in Italy has undoubtedly benefited this Mercedes-Benz. The mild climate has been kind to both the chassis and bodywork of this W460, and the G-Class presents in attractive, honest, original and driving condition. Both the interior and exterior are well cared for. It certainly does not present itself as a worn-out workhorse, something that cannot always be said of a vehicle originally designed for precisely that purpose.
