The Mercedes-Benz W113 (1963–1971) was the successor to the legendary 300 SL (W198) and 190 SL (W121). Designed by Paul Bracq and Béla Barényi, it featured a slightly more angular shape than its predecessors and was the first SL in which significant investment was made in safety features, such as the crumple zone conceived by Barényi. Sharp edges and corners disappeared from the interior; seat belts were not yet mandatory at the time but were available as an option. To reduce weight, the doors, bonnet, and boot lid were made of aluminium. The two-seater convertible was supplied as standard with a soft top. The optional hardtop was lightly domed, resembling the roof of a Chinese temple, and thus soon earned the nickname “Pagoda.”
The first model to be introduced, the 230 SL (1963–1967), was equipped with a 2,306 cc inline six-cylinder engine, producing 150 hp and a top speed of 200 km/h. A total of 19,831 examples of the 230 SL were sold, of which 4,752 were delivered to the USA. The American models can be distinguished by different headlights, non-metric instruments, and a number of other modifications to comply with U.S. regulations. In the United States, models with automatic transmission, air conditioning, and the so-called whitewall tires were particularly popular.
The W113 features prominently on many “most beautiful cars of the 20th century” lists and was very popular among show-business personalities. John Lennon’s 1965 230 SL, for example, was offered for sale in 2011 for the phenomenal sum of $495,000—quite a figure compared to its original purchase price of approximately $8,000.
The Mercedes-Benz 230 SL with automatic transmission offered by Classic Park was originally delivered new in Germany in 1966 and imported into the Netherlands in 1995. The car then came into the ownership of the workshop manager of a large Mercedes-Benz dealership near Eindhoven. During his ownership, the 230 SL was very professionally restored around 20 years ago, with great attention to detail, quality, and finish. Naturally, the car has been carefully maintained throughout this period.
In 2017, we sold this beautiful 230 SL on his behalf to a highly respected German client. Since then, the Pagoda has been registered in Germany. During his ownership, the car was used very regularly and maintained to perfection; most recently, the costly overhaul of the Bosch fuel injection pump was carried out. As a result, the Mercedes is in very good technical and cosmetic condition. The bright white exterior, with paintwork that has remained in excellent condition, contrasts beautifully with the dark blue leather interior and dark blue soft top.
In short: a well-functioning classic car in superb condition.
