The Porsche 356A Coupe, as offered by Classic Park, is in very good condition. The bodywork and interior of the car are partly restored between 2013 and 2014. The technique, such as the engine and gearbox, have been reconditioned in 2015. The 356 has the original colour scheme, Meissen Blue with a red interior. The car comes with a Dutch registration. The engine is not matching but is period correct.
The Porsche 356 is the first production model of Porsche and produced from 1948 untill 1965. The first 50 cars were produced in Gmund in 1948 and 1949. In 1950 the production line moved to Zuffenhausen in Germany. The creator of the 356, Ferdinand ‘Ferry’ Porsche (the son of Ferdinand Porsche Sr.), set the goal to design a small, lightweight sports car with simple, and therefore affordable to maintain, technique. According to Mr Porsche such a light sports car was much more fun to drive than a heavier sports car. Besides this, a heavier car needs much more power to gain the same performance than a lighter car, which in the end always means more complex technique. Aerodynamics is in this case very important, the 356’s height of just 1.2 meter complemented on a higher top speed and driving characteristics.
The Porsche 356 has a special lay-out for a small sports car: The engine Is in the back, the car has a short wheelbase and Is equipped with rear wheel drive. The engine is also special: It’s a Volkswagen derived 4-cylinder boxer engine. The 356 produces a nice and recognisable sound. The first 356’s made in Gmünd are made from aluminium, the later German examples are all made of steel. This has to do with the necessary cost reduction that was forced in Germany.
The 356 has four different generations: the ‘pre-A’ (1948 – 1955), A (1955-1959), B (1960 – 1963) and C (1964 – 1965). The 356 has various engine types, varying for 1100cc to 2000cc. The 2000cc types were called Carrera. All the different engine types were connected to a manual 4-speed gearbox.
The 356 is successful in different races. Rallies like Luik-Rome-Luik, Le Mans, Tour de France Automobile, 12-hours of Reims and the Targa Florio are all very successful. The success of winning its class in the Targa Florio in 1960 is thanks to the collaboration with Abarth, now known as Fiat tuner. Abarth adapted the 356 by making the bodywork narrower and lighter, thus decreasing air resistance. This special rally version became known as Porsche Abarth 356B Carrera GTL.
Between 1948 and 1965 a little more than 76.000 356’s were produced by Porsche. Over half of the cars survived until this day. Being an exhibit in a museum or collection, as a daily driver or as a restorable restoration project.
