This 1966 Ford Mustang Fastback, as offered by Classic Park, is in very good condition. The Mustang has been extensively restored in Holland. A new interior, new air conditioning system, reconditioned automatic gearbox, new wiring loom in the front of the car, new leaf springs and a new exhaust system are fitted to this Mustang. And last but not least, the car is given a new paintjob. Photos of the restoration are included with the car. It has a 4.7 litre V8, developing 209 hp. This car was imported to The Netherlands in 2008 and comes with a Dutch registration.
Ford introduced the Mustang in 1964. Even Ford could not have predicted the enormous success and that the Mustang would remain in production for over 50 years. The Mustang was the first ‘ponycar’: an affordable sports coupe with a long front and short rear. The fact that the Mustang was a cheap car so the younger generations were able to buy it, definitely made the car a sales success.
The first generation, which was available from 1964 until 1973, had a selling price of $2.368 (around €14.000 today). Ford estimated to sell approximately 100.000 cars in the first year. This number was reached after only three months. The following nine months another 318.000 pieces were sold. The first year-and-a-half after introduction, Ford sold over one million Mustangs.
The Mustang used many components of his predecessors, the Falcon and Fairlane. As a consequence, the technique was reliable and cheap. This made life much easier for the factory workers and mechanics, as they were familiar with the technique which made assembly and repairs faster. The dealerships profited as well: parts were already in stock and special tools were not needed.
Throughout the years, a variety of engines were available for this generation. The smallest engine is a 2.8 litre inline-six with 96 hp. The biggest engine is a 7 litre V8 with 380 hp. These engines were all connected to a 3 or 4-speed manual transmission or a 3-speed automatic gearbox.
The Mustang’s styling has changed during the years. From the model year 1969, the car received an additional two headlamps and a longer front end. The Mustang became wider, longer, lower and heavier each year until the replacement of the Mustang II, which was based on the Ford Pinto, in 1973. This decision was made by Ford because of the upcoming oil-crisis. The public wanted a smaller, more economical car.
The Mustang I is produced in the United States as well as Venezuela and Mexico. The Mustang has become a part of the American culture throughout the years. Partly due to its appearance in the movie Bullit, where main character played by Steve McQueen, races a Ford Mustang GT Fastback through the streets of San Francisco.
