The Ferrari Mondial series was built from 1980 to 1993. The first model was the Mondial 8, designed by Pininfarina. It was the successor of the 308 GT4, designed by Bertone. The Mondial name was derived from one of the successful Ferrari sports cars for racing in the fifties. The Mondial was optically but also actually a lot bigger than its predecessor. Both cars have a mid-engine which together with the 2 + 2 configuration (four seats) was a challenge for the designers.
The performance of the 3-liter V8 was a bit disappointing. This was improved when the Mondial Quattrovalvole (QV) came out in 1982, with four valves per cylinder. The power output was increased from 214 to 235 horsepower.
Simultaneously with the announcement of the 328, Ferrari presented the Mondial 3.2 at the Frankfurt Motor Show in 1985. This 3200 cc engine had an increased power ratio of 270 hp. The interior was also upgraded. The Mondial got the front bumper of the 328 which gave the car a much better look.
In 1989 Ferrari presented the fourth and final variant, the Mondial t. Die "t" refers to the transverse gearbox, the same configuration as in the 348. The engine was placed in the length of the car. The engine capacity was increased to 3400 cc, resulting in an output of 300 hp.
The Mondial QV, 3.2 and t were also available as a 4 seater convertible. Especially this model has played many roles in Hollywood films. Just go and see the wonderful movie "Scent of a Woman" with Al Pacino!
In 1993, the production of the series Mondial was stopped. To date, this model had no successor.
